If you could remove one step from the basic skincare routine what would it be?
If this question popped a few years back, I'd probably answer: skipping toner. I neglected toners for years due to my bad experience with it when I was a teenager. Back then I had been using a toner from a local brand and it was an everyday torture on my face. It never failed to leave a slight burning sensation on my face which is no good at all. The only thing that I like about it is the satisfying feeling that I get whenever I see dirt on the cotton balls.
This year as I start to take care of my skin more, I've vowed to give toners another try. Only this time, I want to ensure that I'll be using alcohol-free ones so as to not irritate my skin. Although I found the perfect one for me (included on my Quarterly Empties), I still want to try out other options. That's when I had given this Clarifying Toner from SKIN by John Robert Powers a try.
Known as a learning institution, John Robert Powers has now extended its brand to cater to skincare needs by creating its own beauty line called SKIN. I bought their Clarifying Toner from BeautyMNL and it was delivered to my doorstep the next day. This particular toner suits normal to oily skin, which I have, whereas their Hydrating Toner is good for dry skin. What made me buy it is the written "non-comedogenic" and "hypo-allergenic" claims on the packaging. Non-comedogenic means it won't likely clog your pores, while hypo-allergenic means reducing possible allergic response.
Now, let me share with you my thoughts about it. As soon as the product arrived, I tried it right away that night and discovered that it is not alcohol-free. As disappointed as I got, I still pushed through the application which only took me back to my teenage years. That slight tingling sensation is back, evident by the hint of an alcohol through the smell of it. To think that it costs about PHP 349.00 (for 200ml), I honestly felt like I have wasted my money on this one.
I also observed the following:
- When I tried pouring a minimal amount on my hands to pat on my face, I noticed that it can be drying on the skin. If it makes my hands feel dry what more could it possibly do to my face if I use it more often, right?
- The burning sensation feels worse when you have acne or pimples on your face.
- Using toners with alcohol in it makes the whole healing process of an acne or a pimple slower.
Apparently, I'm not liking this product. It's a 0.5/5 for me. Spare me but I got to give a 0.5 score for the pink packaging. 😆 Maybe if they do more research on the ingredients, this product could have a potential. Also, I won't feel guilty for spending money if only it does wonders on my face and sans the burning sensation.
Well, that's it for now. Drop by again next time for another honest review. Feel free to share your thoughts on the comment section. 💖
